Physical accessibility of public-use buildings for all people in Slovenia, regardless of their disability, as well as access to services, are key tasks in ensuring equal rights and promoting the inclusive functioning of our society.
As part of the project “Nationwide awareness-raising campaign on the social inclusion of persons with disabilities”, the Urban Planning Institute of the Republic of Slovenia will raise awareness among owners and managers of public-use buildings about the applicable legislation in the field of universal design, construction and use of buildings. In addition, it will carry out accessibility assessments of 100 public-use buildings whose services are included in the list of benefit providers for holders of the EU Disability Card.
Publicly available accessibility information on buildings will be made available to EU Disability Card holders through the website and mobile application of the EU Disability Card. This information will enable users to check the physical accessibility of buildings and their services before using them. To improve awareness and information provision, detailed accessibility assessments will also be sent to building owners, managers and tenants, allowing them to identify barriers that must be removed in accordance with the deadlines set out in the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities Act (ZIMI) and the requirements of universal design by the end of 2025.
In addition to experts from the Urban Planning Institute of the Republic of Slovenia, students of urban planning and architecture, as well as students with disabilities, are involved in the field assessment of buildings. The project aims to educate future planners and raise public awareness about the importance of ensuring universal accessibility of buildings and services.
The project “Nationwide awareness-raising campaign on the social inclusion of persons with disabilities” will contribute to greater social inclusion of people with different types of disabilities and promote their active and equal participation in society.
The project partners are: the National Council of Disabled Organisations of Slovenia (NSIOS) as the project lead, the Urban Planning Institute of the Republic of Slovenia as the project partner, and other implementing organisations.
The project is implemented within the framework of the European Cohesion Policy Programme 2021–2027 in Slovenia, under Policy Objective 4: A more social and inclusive Europe implementing the European Pillar of Social Rights, Priority 7: Long-term care, health and social inclusion, and Specific Objective ESO4.11: Enhancing equal and timely access to quality, sustainable and affordable services, including services that promote access to housing and person-centred care, including healthcare; modernising social protection systems, including promoting access to social protection, with a particular focus on children and disadvantaged groups; improving accessibility, including for persons with disabilities, the effectiveness and resilience of healthcare systems and long-term care services (ESF+).
